A letter from His Holiness the Dalai Lama

3 October 2008

The Lam Dre or Path and Fruit is one of the most profound teachings in Tibetan Buddhism. I often observe that Tibetan religious culture faithfully preserves the most complete form of the Indo-Buddhist tradition extant in the world today. It is a tradition derived principally from the great Indian university of Nalanda. This Path and Fruit tradition derives directly from the great Indian Master Virupa, who was abbot of that great institution.

This teaching, brought to Tibet by Drogmi Lotsawa, has been passed down in an unbroken lineage to the present Sakya Dagtri Rinpoche, who is head of the Sakya lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

I myself had the good fortune to receive this teaching from Kyabje Chogye Trichen Rinpoche.

I am pleased to know that Sakya Dagtri Rinpoche is to bestow this precious teaching in Australia in 2009 at the request of the Drogmi Retreat Centre. Dagtri Rinpoche is eminently qualified to confer this wonderful instruction and I have no doubt that everyone who attends and has the opportunity to benefit from his knowledge and experience will be most fortunate.
